LOCAL ARTISTS CHOOSE UNCONVENTIONAL EXHIBITION SPACE
In Western Australia we are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to art, we have an abundance of talented artists! But what if you are an artist and want to get your work out in front of the public? One group of artists are using an unconventional way to exhibit their work, by hanging it in a staircase in a heritage hotel in the centre of Fremantle.
The exhibition titled ‘ASCENDING, W.A. artists on the rise’, features the work of ten up and coming artists all with very different styles, subject matter and personalities. ‘The group is exhibiting together but they are all very individual in their work’, said Teresa Fernandez who curates the gallery exhibitions. ‘This exhibition has adopted the approach of something for everyone with variety being the key, so you can just enjoy the exhibition or support a local artist and take one home.’
Recently an exhibition artwork literally walked out the front door of the gallery under the arm of a patron. We know how it feels to find something you really love and want to take it home. This exhibition has that type of work in spades, come and find your ‘must have’ piece and let us wrap it for you. It’ll be a steal!
‘The National Hotel is dedicated to promoting and supporting local artists which is why we established the gallery, and having a fabulous heritage building as the backdrop makes it very special indeed’ said Karl Bullers owner of the National Hotel and Staircase Gallery. ‘It also potentially opens the art experience to a whole new audience because of the relaxed nature of a gallery inside a hotel.’
The exhibition space occupies the central staircase and landing areas of the hotel making the viewing experience quite different to a regular gallery. Perfectly suited to relaxed viewing, the exhibition starts at the entry to the hotel, winding its way up and around the stairs to finish at the rooftop bar where you may choose to indulge in a drink whilst enjoying 360 degrees view of Fremantle.
